Pumice (a.k.a. bims) is the name of the lightweight volcanic rocks which have a porous structure. Turkey is pretty rich in pumice mineral. In different regions, pumice is used to form a concrete block as a wall element in construction sector after being crushed into size ranges 0-5 mm in general and mixed with cement at certain composition. Pumice, owing to its structure is a material of a breathing kind. Pumice blocks lose its breathing ability when it is overcoated by the plain grout. Correct action is onto the pumice surface to put the right material which can facilitate breathing ability. Styronit m value varies between 1 and 2, that means Styronit is a perfect breathing material. When it’s solely applied onto the wall components, it protects and also insulates the wall without any further need of other coating material. The smoothness of the wall surface on which Styronit is applied prevents the unnecessary material consumption. But in fact, there is generally a need to level and smoothen the surfaces of application and always will be. Under these opposing circumstances to keep the breathing ability of the surface as it is at the beginning, we are bringing a new technique into use. In this technique, by using pump the surface is first leveled with bims grout into which dose of 120-150 cement is added. Then, applying Styronit with either a trowel or a pump, the process is finalized. Pumice within this mixture composition has better insulation properties than it has in the block form. Consequently, using this technique and with the contribution of the leveling grout, better insulation properties can be achieved and the costs are reduced to a reasonable level. The amount of job done by the pump is four and five times increased in m2/day and the surface coating of the complete building is done in a very short time period. We think that this process should be evaluated in both of the walls and floors for thermal, sound, moisture insulation, and fire protection especially in the project phase. The use of combi boilers in flats and laminated tiles on the floor bring up thermal and sound insulation subjects. The insulation of the floors on each face with Styronit process, at one side, will provide an effective insulation, from the other side, won’t cost too much money.
